Stricker wins Northern Trust, moves to No. 2
null
LOS ANGELES – Even with a big lead, Steve Stricker expected a tough day. Everyone else expected him to win.

Turns out both sides were right.

Stricker watched a six-shot lead slip to two after just five holes Sunday at Riviera before he steadied himself and closed with a 1-under 70 for a two-shot victory over Luke Donald in the Northern Trust Open.

His fourth PGA Tour victory in his last 15 starts moved him up to No. 2 in the world ranking.

Stricker won for the eighth time in his career, and once again welled up with tears after the victory. This time, all it took was a reminder of where he was four years ago, when he lost his PGA Tour card.

Crane rides hot putter to win Farmers Insurance Open
null
SAN DIEGO – Ben Crane put his name back in the news for the best reason of all. He won another golf tournament.

Crane made two birdie putts longer than 45 feet to build a big enough cushion that missing a few short putts down the stretch didn’t cost him Sunday in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Crane knocked in a 30-inch par putt on the final hole for a 2-under 70 and a one-shot victory over Michael Sim, Brandt Snedeker and Marc Leishman. It was Crane’s third career victory, and first in nearly five years, and this one earned him a trip back to the Masters.

  Watson, Prugh share Hope lead
null
LA QUINTA, Calif. – Bubba Watson, Alex Prugh and Joe Ogilvie all had late chances Sunday to create a little separation atop the Bob Hope Classic field.

All three made mistakes better suited to their amateur playing partners, leaving the leaderboard even more crowded heading to the Monday finale.

Watson double-bogeyed the final hole in the fourth round, dropping him back into a tie with PGA Tour rookie Prugh at 23-under 265. Prugh missed a 3-foot putt to bogey his own final hole, while Ogilvie sat two strokes back after a double bogey on his 17th.
